(MTSI) is a 100% employee-owned engineering services and solutions company that provides high-demand technical expertise in Digital Transformation, Modeling and Simulation, Rapid Capability Development, Test and Evaluation, Artificial Intelligence, Autonomy, Cybersecurity and Mission Assurance.
We are currently looking for a Software & Data Systems Intern to join our team in Alexandria, VA.
Responsibilities:
The intern will support the design, implementation, and maintenance of a Canonical Data Model (CDM) that integrates structured, semi-structured, and model-based data sources. Projects will involve assisting with data pipelines, modeling, API development, and knowledge management to support enterprise integration and model-based engineering initiatives. The intern will work with senior engineers and data scientists, gaining exposure to modern data architecture, web interface development, and advanced modeling tools.
Typical duties may include:
- Assisting in the development and documentation of data schemas and standards for interoperability across multiple data sources.
- Supporting the development and testing of ETL (extract, transform, load) pipelines and data validation routines.
- Contributing to backend and API development using Python (FastAPI/Django/Flask).
- Assisting with database implementation and queries, including NoSQL (MongoDB) and graph databases (Neo4j).
- Supporting the integration of data with model orchestration and simulation tools.
- Helping document processes and data standards for knowledge sharing.
Qualifications:
- Pursuing a BS or MS in Computer Science, Data Science, Systems Engineering, or a related technical field.
- GPA of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 Scale
- Strong performance in coursework related to programming, databases, or data modeling.
- Interest in data engineering, software development, and knowledge management.
- Comfortable supporting multiple concurrent projects in a dynamic environment.
- US citizenship required. Must be able to obtain/maintain a US government security clearance.
- Self-motivated and able to work both independently and as part of a collaborative team.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Desired Skills
- Experience with Python (libraries including Pydantic, numpy, NetworkX) and familiarity with frameworks such as FastAPI, Django, or Flask.
- Familiarity with databases (MongoDB, Neo4j) and data modeling concepts.
- Exposure to version control tools (Git).
- Experience with RESTful API design and/or web development basics.
- Familiarity with containerization (Docker) and/or cloud platforms (AWS, Azure) is a plus.
- Interest or coursework in model-based systems engineering (MBSE) or semantic data (RDF/OWL) is a plus.
